Friday Workshop: Embellishment and Fabric Manipulation

Embellishment, when chosen well, can enhance the simplest silhouette.  This class will cover some of Kenneth’s favorite techniques, culled from his lab notes and blog posts for Threads Magazine.  These include braiding, pleating, fantasy feathers and ruffles, fantasy fabric flowers, fluting, and frog closures.  The students will make samples of these techniques, so they can keep them for reference.  Materials list will be supplied.   March 11 supply list

Saturday lecture:  Make Mine Manhattan – the Life of a New York Designer

When Kenneth moved to New York in 2004, he gained access to a new environment full of new sights and sounds.  This new environment and access to a wider variety of materials helped him to evolve his work in new directions.  Through slides and lecture, Kenneth will show you how his new home has impacted his designing.  He will be bringing examples of his new work for everyone to enjoy.

Saturday workshop: Cool Tricks Takes Manhattan

Living on the East coast, Kenneth has needed to work with more difficult fabrics to accommodate the colder climate.  Kenneth will show some techniques for working with fake fur, sewing it to itself and to smooth fabrics, and sewing with leather.  Boiled wool (felted wool) is another new favorite, so Kenneth will show his techniques for seams and edges using this thick fabric.  Materials list will be supplied.  March 12 supply list

Sunday Workshop:  Fabric Embroidery with Beads

This class starts with one hour lecture-demo covering equipment and construction techniques.  The other five and one half hours are hands-on, where we learn the stitches by what he calls the “concept” method.  This serves the student better than learning by rote, as certain stitches are grouped by method of construction, i.e. the running stitch.  In this way, the student can repair existing pieces, or study them for inspiration, as they know how the stitch operates.  Materials list will be supplied.  March 13 supply list
