Magnificent Millinery - Dare A Head Go Bare?

Lecture and Trunk Show - Wayne is a 25 year veteran milliner who specializes in designing and making women's blocked fashion hats. Last year, he created 5 beautiful hats that were worn in 5 different weddings in England and 3 of the clients said they were wearing the nicest hats! Wayne will discuss how he got to where he currently is in his exploration of hat making.

Millinery Wizardry - Embellishing a Blocked Straw Hat

In this workshop, you will learn the best techniques for embellishing a blocked straw hat of your choice. But, first, you must decide and order your hat STYLE, COLOR, AND SIZE.

1. There are 13 styles from which to choose.

2. Choose two colors (1st and 2nd choice): Click on the bottom picture where you see the stacked hats. The picture is entitled "Straw Colors & Notes." Choose your colors.

3. Measure your head: Under "Straw Colors & Notes," you will see a message from Wayne explaining how to order your hat and instructions on how to measure your head.

You will order directly from Wayne using either his phone number or his email address.

Each student will need to bring a basic sewing kit (scissors, thread, pins, hand needles, thimbles, etc.) to the workshop. Also, you are encouraged to bring any additional trims from your stash that you might like to use for embellishing (ribbon, flowers, buttons, etc).

The materials kit fee of $35.00 will include a blocked hat of your choosing as well as ribbons, veiling, maline, silk fabric, and a variety of other trims. PLEASE PAY THE MATERIALS KIT FEE WITH A SEPARATE CHECK MADE OUT TO SPEAKER OR BRING CASH.

Also, available for purchase, will be a wide variety (price, color, style) of millinery flowers.

Exploring the History of Millinery Flower Making

Todd Roehrman has been designing costumes for theatre and dance companies on the West Coast for the past 21 years and his accolades seem to be endless! In addition to his many honors, he teaches workshops to small groups in silk flower making techniques. Todd's lecture and trunk show will focus on the history of millinery flower making and how he chose to enter this artistic field.

Is It Real or Is It Silk? Creating Silk Roses for Embellishing Hats, Purses, or Garments

A Little Trunk Show with Big Ideas

Mary Lou is the designer of Park Bench Patterns which are a unique collection of patterns illustrating tailoring of the garment to give the most flattering fit. This trunk show is not only entertaining (we all like looking at clothes), but is also educational. By seeing the garment and by talking about the pattern design, fabric and sizing adjustments you come away with a better understanding of what it takes so you end up with a garment you will love wearing.

Incorporating Your Personal Color Palette into Your Sewing Wardrobe

As designer and owner of Park Bench Patterns, Mary Lou will be taking you on a journey into discussion of your personal color palette, textures of fabrics, and analysis of styles. Don’t collect every color in the rainbow and then just leave them in your closet! Learn to work with colors you will really wear. Examples of wearing ease will be presented.

Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and camera.

How to Build a 'Park Bench' that you will Love!!!

Pick a Park Bench pattern of your choice. Choose 1 pattern from #7 - "Denver City Park", #14 - "Audubon Park", or #17 - "Williamsburg" and bring pattern, fabrics, interfacing, and matching thread and your sewing machine to make a garment. Mary Lou will provide individualized instruction from beginning to end as well as assistance with fitting and designing that works for each person.

* Fabrics (pre-washed if you plan to wash your finished garment)
* Fusible Interfacing (pre-shrunk with steam or warm water if you plan to wash your finished garment)

When more is Better: Designing with Multiple Fabrics & Trims

Leilani will present a slide show of garments from haute couture and RTW designers known for their ability to use multiple fabrics,trims and techniques to create garments that fairly sing with movement and texture. We will see designs by Kenzo/Antonio Marras, Zandra Rhodes, Timothy James Andrews and Koos van den Akker.

A trunk show of Leilani's garments designed on the principle that more is definitely better will follow the slide show. Gaments will be available for inspection and photos arfter the program and during both workshops.

Designing a Garment the Koos Way

Prerequisite: Students must attend the May 12th workshop, When More is Better: Designing with Multiple Fabrics & Trims

Students will design and begin construction on a garment using the principles covered in the previous day's program and workshop. This will be a garment with simple design lines so that all the emphasis will be on fabrics and trims. Participants will have a choice of only two patterns to work with and there will be no fitting work done in the workshop.

The Magic of Silk Painting on Wearable Art

Moscow born artist, Natasha Foucault, has worked exclusively in the medium of painting on silk for over 25 years. In her lecture she will take you on an adventure of many of her works.
Natasha’s works on silk have been exhibited and sold in both museums and commercial galleries throughout the world. She received second prize at the First International Silk Painting Congress in 1998 for Excellence in Silk Painting and The Best of the Show Award both at 2004 and 2006 Silk-In-Santa Fe Festivals.

The Splendor of Brooches and Buttons

Sue studied for 5 years with a Chinese Master learning artistic techniques and she continually expands and shares her knowledge in the field of fiber arts and painting. The Art of Beaded Embroidery

Sue will be teaching the techniques of beading and embroidery around the cabochon. A cabochon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished to create a stone with a convex top and a flat bottom.

The materials kit fee will be $40.00 and will include beads, needles, a cabachon and other items necessary for the workshop. Each student should bring a magnifying glass if they would like to use one for close up work and a small pair of scissors for clipping threads.
